Anne Hastings currently serves as Vice President of the Board of Directors of the University of Fondwa USA, Inc. dedicated to work in Haiti. She also serves on the board of the Microinsurance Catastrophe Risk Organization (MiCRO), an innovative insurance facility that she helped to found with MercyCorps and Swiss Re in 2012.
Today, Anne is also a consultant to the Platform for Economic Inclusion at the World Bank. In that capacity she is facilitating an NGO Collaborative of global leaders dedicated to ending the most extreme forms of poverty in our lifetime. Prior to assuming this position, Anne was a Global Advocate and Senior Advisor with Uplift, an initiative that invested in holistic livelihoods programs designed to address the multi-dimensional needs of extremely poor households such that they are able to “graduate” out of this type of poverty within a defined time period.
For 3 years prior to joining Uplift, Anne was Executive Director of the Microfinance CEO Working Group, a collaboration of the CEOs of 10 global microfinance networks that promote responsible microfinance around the world.
Between 1996 and 2013, Anne served in the leadership of Fonkoze, Haiti’s largest microfinance institution, first as Director of Fonkoze and then as CEO of Fonkoze Financial Services, S.A., which she helped to found in July 2004. Under her leadership, the institution grew from 2 volunteer employees to almost 900 full-time employees. Upon her departure, the institution had 46 branches throughout rural Haiti, with over 275,000 clients, more than 60,000 of whom had microcredit loans.
One of Anne’s most important accomplishments during her tenure at Fonkoze was to replicate in Haiti BRAC’s pioneering program for the ultra-poor, today known as the Graduation Approach to eliminating extreme poverty.
Her awards include (1) an Honorary Doctorate in Business Leadership from Duquesne University, (2) a Women Together Award because of her commitment to the elimination of extreme poverty and hunger and (3) a Schwab Foundation Social Entrepreneur Award.
Anne holds a Ph.D. from the University of Virginia.
